Newwwwww
1/15/24 -- Hey you, hihihiiiii. Got a few updates in the way of new art that have been a bit long in the coming to my site. I added 2 new paintings, one that is a large double-portrait you can find Here, title "Mediterranean Summer". This was done as a commission for some folks you might say I know. The other is a continuation of my "Mana" series, title "Mana Mana'o". This is the ying to the yang of my previous painting "Mana Ho'opa". Interested parties can purchase this painting from my shop. Enjoy.
Flash
4/7/23 -- After a bit of a reprieve, I've started adding some of the latest art I've been in motion with over the last little bit. These were commissions, series work additions, portraits, and an edge-case painting that I had completed, let sit for 4 months, and then decided to completely redo. That was great, as in, not great and was completely infuriating, but necessary. Oh well.
In any event, the first of the new stuff is a portrait commission I was asked/honored/pleased to do, that I've titled "Unison, or PINKYELLOWPEACH". I think this will ultimately be a background style I'll expand on, so expect more of this/these. Like usual, it's BRIGHT. I'm from Hawai'i, what do you expect?
The Maker
11/12/22 -- After just about 2 years (!), my long in development final painting for my Kahelelani shell lei series, "The Maker" was finished in August. A few weeks back I completed the silver leaf application and then was able to varnish it to finish out what has been a forever long process here. There were a number of reasons this painting took so long - first, it's the biggest work I've ever done at 4 tall feet by 4 feet wide. So, alot of space to add paint to. Second, I worked for about 4 months on this initially. to get the base undercoats in, and then took a break to work on a few commissions that came my way. So that delayed me getting the next steps done for a few months. I started back into it after those were completed, and worked for about another 4 months on it and then subsequently, got burned out on it. My eyes and brain honestly got tired of seeing the image and working the incredible amount of detail required on the hands and I was just mentally tired of it. So again, I took off another few months, which also coincided with getting another commission. So after finishing that piece, it had been over a year of me working this painting off and on. Without question, the longest I've ever spent on a piece. So from there I sat down once again and started to finish it out. From June of this year, to August I finished out the detail work, shading overcoats, background color and other nit-picky things I wanted on it, and finally had the work done by the last week of Summer.
The timing and work load aside, I'm very proud of this painting and I'm also very excited that my long held desire to have two unique, but related series on Hawaiian cultural pillars ('Auana hula and Kahelelani shell lei) is done. These two series relate in a number of ways:
-
Each has 5 paintings in the series:
-
A large action painting
-
A portrait of someone who represents the cultural past-time
-
A related object still life from that past-time
-
2 background design panels
-
-
Each follow a specific design I came up with:
-
The action paintings are purposely huge (3 feet to 4 feet) and feature a breezy colorful (Hawaiian!) background with metallic leaf application
-
The portraits feature a much larger amount of blocked-out metallic leaf, but share the same type of background as the action paintings
-
The still life paintings reference the metallic colors of the first two (silver and copper) in applied paint I added, but feature a unique blockily-painted black background. The subject matter is also purposely done in an thick alla prima paint style
-
The backgrounds are basically cut-outs of of the same background being used in the action and portrait paintings. These were made to determine the color, leaf type, and painting style for the whole of the series before I started anything else
-
-
Most important - Each series represents a tradition core to Hawaiian culture and history: I've long felt there is not enough local, Hawaiian art that does this. I also think that most of the work that does touch on these cultural items are not done very well. So I wanted to change both situations by tackling them head on. Hopefully this ends up being successful.
That's alot of writing on this, but in addition to explaining the creation timeline for the new painting, I also wanted to provide background on these 2 series that's comprised the bulk of my artwork the last 4 years. Would love to hear thoughts on all this - hit me up on social media (IG's best) or via email at daenrosehawaii@gmail.com. Mahalo
Art Update
11/2/21 -- My latest painting in my "Mana" series is up on the site, and features a bunch of photos to see the gilded, thick paint I'm using on these. "Mana Hoʻopā" is going to be a part of a triptych I'm doing in this series - so, 3 related paintings as a whole. I've started work on the next one and it shouldn't be too long before that's finished up. Stay tuned.
New Paintings Available
7/27/21 -- Two of of my new paintings, "Mana Wahine" and "Rosa Mundi", got added to the Art section and to the Shop. For "Mana", this is the start of a new series I plan to work on that focuses on sprituality. At present, I'm looking at creating at least four paintings in this group, and I am nearly finished with the second. Each of these paintings will feature a somewhat muted color palette that helps enforce the metallic paints I'm using for the figurative and abstract parts. In composition, I think the combination makes for a pretty compelling visual.
For Rosa Mundi, this is the first of a few smaller works I'm going to be doing that are not quite so expensive, and feature a bit of a different style (re: looser, faster, THICKER! brushwork). There are a good deal of pictures for this one of the paint edges so you can see the chunkier bits, so check it out.
Exhibit News 2
5/1/21 -- One of my newest paintings (and series!) was selected to be shown at the Maryland Art Place's "Out of Order" exhibition. This exhibit and auction is annually, their biggest show they curate, so I'm excited to take part in it. In addition, its also one of their biggest in general, considering how things have been with COVID, so doubly cool.
Exhibit News
12/12/20 -- 3 of my landscape paintings were selected to be a part of the Maryland Art Place's "Under 500" art show. This show features paintings and other work from a select group of Maryland artists that are all under $500. To coincide with the show, I've discounted all of the paintings in this series for the next 2 weeks. If you're interested in picking one of these up as a gift (or, my problem every Christmas, as a gift for ME) for the holidays, now's the time! Visit my Shop for more details.
Site Update
8/27/20 -- I just reformatted a number of new pages on the site in order to make a few things hopefully easier to navigate and/or request. Here's the details:
-
New home page (me, painting from a few months back. This piece isn't on the site yet, as I'm still working it. However, it's going to be the center piece painting in my Kahelelani series mentioned in my last post.
-
Art Section Update 1: These pages are reformatted so you can see larger photos of my work. This is the case for all of the paintings I've got up now.
-
Art Section Update 2: I've chunked out each of the series I've worked on so they're easier to see what's what.
Last but not least, I've added in 2 new paintings (here and here) I've completed. The landscape is for sale, so take a look and grab it if you're interested.

Kahelelani Series
3/28/20 -- I shared this on IG a few weeks back, but I've created several new works that are now on display in my Art section. The second set in my Hawaiian cultural series, my "Kahelelani" set will focusing on Ni'ihau shell lei, it's creation and the artisans that make them. There are currently 4 paintings up in the set, and I'm in progress with the last one now. That painting will probably take me several months to finish, as it's going to be a huge, 4' x 4 diamond canvas that will rival my larger hula 'auana picture. Check out my IG for updates to see how this is coming along.
In addition to this set, I also uploaded a new abstract landscape, which brings that set to a total of 3. In this picture, I focused on yellow tones to create some contrast with the blue and black paintings I previously made. I really like how these are coming out and think its an interesting and unexplored way of doing landscape paintings. I'm working on a final painting to close these out and its going to center on red and orange tones, which I think will look good with other images. Stay tuned.
